By the word “teacher” we mean here a working educator and not a religious leader spell with a capital ‘T’. In the pedagogical sense also the image of a modern teacher is not what it was in the past. A teacher in the Academy in Plato in ancient Greek or in the monastic schools of the Mediaeval Age of ancient India or even in the Buddhist monasteries of the latter period cannot be accepted as an ideal under modern condition of life.

A teacher under the present democratic set-up is expected to be a related, balanced personality, perfectly sound in body and mind, neither optimistic nor pessimistic, yet believing in the doctrine or melioration through human efforts. He should have an open and receptive mind ready to accept new ideas from all quartets; but he should also have the capacity to critically examine the pros and cons of all matters, professional or otherwise, in an unbiased way.

He is no recluse but a man with all human interests. Just as other people have their special interest in law, medicine, science or technology he has his in education. He is fully aware that as a profession education is no less jealous a mistress that any other, demanding an unusual alertness of mind and willingness of the spirit to serve and guide a immature children. Tagore’s creative spirit found its scope in education also. His experiment in education had their roots in his own early education and started to take shape with the education of his eldest son, Rabindranath. He did not want to send his son to an ordinary school but decided to educate him according to his own ideal by opening a school at Santiniketan. Thus began his experiment in reviving the ancient ‘Gurukul’ type of education. The teachers lived with in the campus with their families and set personal examples. Tagore insisted the school should have a rural setting trees. He considered this type of school cheaper in the Indian context and quite comfortable in summer. The students were encouraged to participate in the running of the institution and were involved in gardening, campus-cleaning etc.

When Tagore returned from his triumphant tour of Europe in 1917 he conceived the idea of established an institution where the composite culture of India could be presented to the foreigners and where the foreigners could make their genuine contribution to India. So he decided to found Visva Bharati. The work on the university started in 1918 and inaugurated in 1921. His own son took up the burden of managing the whole project and leading scholars and artists from all over India were invited to take up responsibility for various faculties. Tagore wanted the institution to be integrated into its geographical and social surroundings and that maximum opportunities should be provided to bring out the creative faculties of students. There is too, considerable danger in pressing for so much practical work in schools. No- one doubts the inestimable value of the laboratory where the child can find out things for himself, or the countryside where he can make his own observations and collect his own specimens; but there is the danger of pressing such practical work to far in favour of the minority who are indeed potential scientists. The tendency here is to ignore science and cultural discipline and treat is almost solely as technology. Practical work cannot, of course, be abandoned altogether since it is essential in order to drive home basic facts and indeed to satisfy the various instincts of the pupil. Furthermore, to inculcate in the school child thee spirit of discovery is all very desirable; but the teacher must maintain a sense of values, realizing that by far the majority of his charges are unlikely to take up science as a profession in later life and that, in any event, many of them thave no learning that way. But science as a social study is a different matter. It is difficult, for example, to see what cultural benefit any boy or girl can derive in later life from an empirical knowledge of the analytical tables or the formula of the water. On the other hand, knowledge of the everyday applications of chemical analysis can have certain cultural repercussions.

The fuller education of the pupils must always be borne in mind. We are not training future scientific specialists and most therefore always keep before us in our teaching the philosophy of science placed in a historical background and above all the impact of science and society.

Our important factor, however, especially in science teaching, must be taken into consideration, and that is the time factor. Teaching hours are comparatively short. If the ideal educational syllabus is to be achieved, however, one must decide what shall be taught and how much of what, and in coming to this decision the dead wood must be cut out and new shoots encouraged. In other words, a more balanced curriculum is desirable, and this must be periodically revised. Therefore, in spite of the time factor, if it can be agreed that a certain thing should be taught in schools, no matter what it is, than time should be found for it.
